Supernova Friendship Block Swap Finish!

I’m beyond excited to have this one finished and off the sewing table. This was a real struggle to finish with sickness, holidays, other commitments and just feeling the funk of no interest of sewing. I chose to hand quilt the top and didn’t even have it marked out until the beginning of January. After some brainstorming with Gma Schnell I marked for a whole weekend in between other commitments and came away with a lot of work.

I’m pretty NEW to quilting if you have been following along. My first attempt was a lovey that my LO didn’t take to and now has become a doll quilt. My second was a jelly roll quilt and the third I pieced the top but had Gma Schnell finish the rest… Wait for it (dragging my feet) few or several months later I caught the bug after ahem* stalking a new friend on instagram and she sent me in a direction to make my first quilt piecing hst.  Let me just say it came together quickly but my seams weren’t consistent and I bought broadcloth on accident… sigh smh and even this one wasn’t finished by me.

Since then I have made 1 twin, 4 pillows, a very badly pieced mini for myself, a precut packaged vintage quilt (queen), a doll quilt, my first paper pieced mini, 3 mug rugs, 4 slightly smaller than lap quilts, 1 lap quilt, 2 minis for swaps, more bags and pouches than I’d like to count this morning, and in the midst of all that I joined this and made my first sort queen size (62″ square). Why am I listing all this well because mostly I need a reminder of the journey but also maybe to give other people the encouragement I needed to start this adventure. Its ok to start small, make mistakes, become a stalker… it all starts with the first step (well minus the stalker thing because that’s just creepy).

This was also my first quilt-a-long so it was nice to have a friend to work with to make it more fun and definitely someone to complain to about all the nitpicking things that drove me nuts. Christina and I have been thick as thieves back from college with a little lapse in between when I moved away for a bit. We are our own mini (itty bitty only 2) bee. And we try to get together about once a week, if not every other week to craft, eat, and just hang out. So each month if you remember we made each other a block plus an identical one to and then swapped. Then there was this big gap of nothing where we were supposed to be finishing the quilt to do our final post (being what you are reading) for a chance to win some awesome prizes. Hence when I also stopped blogging.

Ok enough already (I hear you) here is the final quilt:

It took me about a month to quilt on and off during naps and the wee hours of the night. Its been lovingly used since. Makes me feel like spring is around the corner.

Supernova Friendship Block Swap Finish!

Oh the things to do…

It has been quite a while (October to be exact) since you have seen a post here. I have been meaning to do this and that to my blog and just haven’t found the time in between keeping the house clean, showings, kids, quilting… the list could go on for sure to fill this post with reasons and excuses of why I can’t spend at least 5 minutes a day. So much has happened that I would love to share but with the new year in full swing already I think a clean slate and a where are we now post will be better than trying to show and tell all that is past.

We are in the midst of showings and open houses to sell our home. We have been here for almost 4 years and we are ready to move on to our next adventure. We have purchased some land in the downtown Indy area not too far from where we are now in the hopes of getting to build our “dream home” of right now. The hubs has diligently listened to all my requests and ideas that we have smooshed together too create a beautiful design. From those ideas he has rendered a drawing and comes up with the concept that we will later have professionally drawn up. We were really hoping to be in that direction currently but stuck in the selling our house portion. We have a bunch of big plans and design elements that I can’t wait to share here.

I have been busy busy working in my craft room. I have managed to make for quilts and a couple minis plus some bags. It was a handmade Christmas for sure. I have also been involved in a few swaps on Instagram that have stretched my creativity and have been such a delight. I continue to finish up my supernova for the end of the month deadline and Christina and I have big plans for the new year. I (almost) joined my first bee but was very hesitant with the choices available. A beginner bee which I’ve never been in one so it makes sense and the other an advanced paper piecing which I could handle but not sure I would solely like to do that the whole time. So I haven’t found a group yet but have enjoyed making things with Christina.

Our #homeschooladvantage had been sorely lacking with showings and holidays and we have relaxed to art and manipulatives. Which both are a hit around here. Hoping to get back into the swing of things and would love to get my hands on the Handwriting without Tears curriculum and materials. Archer will begin speech this week and will continue for a while too work on articulation, beginning sounds and blends. She is excited to have another “teacher” in her schedule. Also hoping to get into another YMCA class when the new session begins. Griffin hit his first 100 years before the new year began and is beginning to put words together to make sentences.

More changes coming soon… But have to wait a bit before we know for sure. And this post is beginning to become winded.

Leave you with one last thing. I had been thinking before the new year about resolutions and new beginnings. I’m not very good at resolutions but I decided on a word to help me focus on this year. I had several in mind but settled on present. I want to be present in all aspects. And I also want to present myself, my true self always. So here’s to bring present while I present myself clearly.

A photo from our weekend trip to Kansas for a friend’s wedding. Also our first weekend out of town without kids.

Supernova Block Swap #5

This month happened to be our last block swap and yet again it was happening a bit later than the 15th. I headed over to Christina’ s on Friday for dinner and some crafting. I packed my bag full to the brim of different projects that I have in progress but didn’t seem to accomplish much of any of them. I blame it on the lull that I have been feeling lately and if you follow along with my instagram you will have seen some scrap projects I have been working during my free time.

While I was there I reworked what I had planned for my IGMINI partner and I’m loving how it is following along with the other projects I’ve been working on. I was devastated this past week and that might be part of why I’m in a funk; but as I was cuddling under my Halloween donut quilt I noticed that a couple of my quilted circles have broken. I checked the thread and well it’s 6 years old and not holding its strength. So she had the idea of me working on it bit by bit so it doesn’t depress me so much. I also put together a small Halloween quilt that needs to be quilted. I made a new plan for a quilt I have planned for my niece. So in all I was able to get some decisions made and little progress on a couple different things.

We also made our last swap and Christina laid out all the blocks so we could see how they would all fit together. We are both looking forward to the final product and discussed how we planned on quilting. Here are the blocks and mine is on the top:

These questions each month have broached a lot of deep conversation and had been great in helping us know more about each other. As I have said before we have known each other since our college days. The this month: What unexpected blessings do you have in your life?

Christina talked about her health and I’m sure she will discuss this in more detail. I talked about my different pregnancies and the blessings I have had with each.

The summer before I found out I was pregnant with Archer was an end to a rough year. My first pregnancies was ectopic and had to be aborted within my eighth week. The year was the hardest for me as a mother, woman and wife and ended with a two week trip to Haiti to teach English with my husband soon after his return from China. During the trip was body was out of whack and when I was home it was over two months before I realized I had not had my cycle. After a whole jar of pickles I decided it was time for a test. It was the day to the year that we lost our first child that we found out we were pregnant again. So unexpected to feel loss and gain at the same time and what a wonderful blessing.

Disclaimer: If you have read my last post and wondering why there hasn’t been any changes is that I’m having trouble deciding where I want to blog from. But soon I promise 🙂

Under Construction

Well there is about to be some overhaul here at Just a Quick Moment. A lot of fun and new things are happening here with the Schnells and here I am again ready for some change. Its like in my everyday life when a big life event happens I make a major change and usually that includes my hair, but since I am lacking much hair to do anything with the change is going to happen here. I have been through a couple other blog names and content and well was just not completely satisfied. And I was finally sitting here one day working and it hit me what I needed.

So with all that said hopefully within this next week I will get my new look and name up and going. Time for a change and its going to be great! Hope you stick around to see the changes 🙂

Our Fall Bucket List

I’m a list maker, taker and builder. I love this as much as my sleep and more than my coffee. So come this Autumn I am in need of a list of things we want to do:

1. Go on a nature hike and collect fun!

2. Go to an orchard and pick apples.
3. Rake leaves and jump in them.
4. Carve pumpkins.
5. Zoo Boo
6. Trick or Treating!
7. Roast marshmallows.
8. Make a thankful tree.
9. Roast pumpkin seeds.
10. Throw a Halloween Bash!!

I kept this list small and manageable. I’m sure there will be other things that make the list but this will be a great start!! Happy Fall!!

Supernova Block Swap #4

I think this is the first time that we have been behind the 15th of the month due date and the excuse is life is full of nasty tart lemons! We are working on selling our house and the Hubs had a drill weekend and she was out of town for a family vacation in which she came back ENGAGED!!

For this swap Christina came over to my house and I made her chili, rhubarb cobbler and some homemade whipped cream. She supplied the corn bread. I’ve been trying to use up whatever fruit I have in my freezer because I loathe having to pack up freezer items during a move. And well she had never had rhubarb.

Needless to say she was late getting here so it didn’t leave us much time to work on any projects. I worked on making a backing for my Halloween donut quilt (more on that later) and she ironed and trimmed some old hsts that she has had in progress for a while. We also swapped our blocks but forgot to talk about question of the month so did that via text later last week.

Here are our blocks together. And again I would have never thought to put together the fabric choices that she used and that is why I’m loving this swap so much.

And here is another picture of just my block. Don’t judge about how wrinkly it is. I’ve had it stored for about a month in a ziploc bag waiting patiently to swap.

The question this month was a pretty intense one and I don’t really feel like delving too deeply into the subject. But here it is.

Forgiveness is an integral part of any healthy relationship. What does forgiveness mean to you? Share with your partner an example of a time you had to forgive someone — or someone had to forgive you — and how it strengthened the relationship.

When discussing this Christina and I both realized that the time we thought of was the same. We both needed to forgive our fathers, yet another thing that we have in common. Mine is a very drawn out story that maybe I will share the entirety of but needless to say 20 years of being estranged from my father and for him to come back into my life shortly before the birth of my first child. To read about Christina’s head on over to her blog.

Yet again linking up to Stephanie and Sandra.

Supernova Block Swap #4

the why in the school

I have a college degree in early childhood education.

I stay home with both my kids.

Education can be such a bear on the wallet.

My children will have more individual attention.

We can go at our own pace and set the schedule we like.

No need to give up the 3 hour afternoon nap yet.

Attention spans are limited.

Learn during play.

Field trips and vacation whenever.

Well this list is incomplete and only partially true but true there are some valid reasons why we decided to homeschool this year. I’m not saying every year will have the same reasons or even look the same but for now this is what is happening.

We are in out third week of homeschool preschool with Archer our 3 yo. If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen a couple pics of the first week. Then I had the intention to write a post about our week and the ins and outs of what we were doing. But then the second week came and well now we are on the third.

We are keeping things pretty lax and seeing how she handles working. We are now doing three mornings a week. I decided on which mornings based on other things we have going on during the week. We only do mornings because truth be told she still takes a three hour afternoon nap almost everyday.

We started just working with the calendar and counting the days and learning a letter of the week using the activities. I don’t take it too seriously if she needs a break, wants to work with something else or if Griffin wants to join in with the fun I’m totally ok changing things up. Some mornings she doesn’t feel up to it but as soon as griff shows interests she jumps right in where we are. Ok here are some pictures I’ve taken over the past three weeks. I think the picture pretty much explains what is happening but if you have questions I’ll be open to talking about it more.
